It’s hard to be certain how Blackjack and the game got started as there is a major debate among card playing enthusiasts all over the world. If asked, one might tell you that the game was born after playing cards were invented approximately 600 years ago. Others might say that people were playing the game 21 and variants of the rules years before Jesus walked the Earth. Only one thing is absolutely certain, and that is the evolution of the game. If you were to search card games online, you will see several games that have many similarities of the game known as Blackjack and 21.
Even if the game 21 was being played as far back as hundreds 600 or 700 B.C. as some people claim, the game was likely quite different since playing cards were not even invented until 1440. However, it has also been said that the early Romans played, what we know today as Blackjack, using blocks of wood long before there were playing cards. If this is true, then it’s possible the purest form of the game was played long, long ago. It is a known fact that Roman soldiers loved to gamble anything from jewels to wives to pass their time.
After playing cards were invented in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg, the game 21 can be traced back to the 15th century in Europe, along with several other games that had basic rules where the object had a lot to do with adding up totals – similar to Blackjack.
In 1875, we started to see the game 21 being played in the United States. Originally, the game was played in gambling halls and still known as its original name of 21 until the early 1900s. Although it was available to play in many of the hot gambling spots, the game 21 was not very popular at first. In an attempt to attract more players, the casinos began to offer a much higher payout as a bonus for any player who hits 21 by holding an ace of spades and a black jack (which could be either clubs or spades). This bonus was often as high as 10:1 and helped gain popularity fast. Unfortunately, the bonus didn’t stick, but the nickname did, and 21 became well known as “Blackjack”.
Fast forward to the 21st century and now Blackjack is being played by millions of gamblers in the comfort of their own home at online casinos. Often, you will see better odds than in the past as well, because of the popularity and the lower overhead presented by the ability to run a casino online. So, there’s never been a better time to make Blackjack money!
